The outdoor classroom wall ready to be decorated as our Wild Wonder Wall

The Wild Wonder Wall – A Catford community art project

Get creative and draw a picture for our Wild Wonder Wall at the Wild Cat Wilderness.
It doesn’t matter what age you are we just want you to draw a something natural for the wall of our new outdoor classroom (and then you can even help paint it!)

The big picture
This year we have built a fabulous classroom, which has a huge blank wall. We want you to draw a picture of something natural you might find outdoors at the Wild Cat Wilderness, our community green space in Catford.
This could be

  • A bird or just a feather
  • A bee or maybe a fly or any other insect or minibeast
  • A tree or just a leaf
  • A wild flower, plant or even a mushroom
  • A fox, a mouse or any other mammal

As long as it’s something living or growing we don’t mind as long as you might find it in Catford (we don’t have jungle animals!)
We have drawn a rough background of trees from the Wild Cat Wilderness (see below) and now just need you to help us finish the Wild Wonder Wall with your pictures of one natural thing. We will choose a selection of the best ones and make them bigger.

What to do?
Just draw your picture on an A4 piece of paper
Your drawing can be just an outline in black and white or in colour and can be a drawing or painting or any medium you like.
Just send it to us by post, email or put it on social media and tag us (details below) including your full name, age (if under 18) and contact details.
By submitting picture you are giving us permission to use it.
Closing date is the 27th June 2021 and you can submit as many pictures as you like.
You will be informed if your picture is to be used at the beginning of July.
During August we will be running a series of events so everyone can help decorate the wall using the winning pictures, plus you can add your name to the classroom as a winning picture.
So pick up your pencil, pen, paints, crayons or charcoal and get creative for the Wild Wonder Wall. I wonder what you will draw?

I’m sorry to say that we have had to pull out of this years event and our community natural dyeing sessions cancelled. We are hoping to make them available however online so watch this space. Please do support the wonderful local artists participating over the two weekends http://catfordarts.org/catford-arts-trail

New activities and volunteering

Visit the What’s On Page to book for volunteering on a Thursday afternoon or Friday morning, for Nature squad fortnightly on a Saturday afternoon or the new date for Be Wild our adult only forest school.

Introducing – Be Wild

Be wild – adult only forest school for Lewisham residents.

We believe that not only children should get to play.

When did you last climb a tree or make a fire? Could you make a hedge out of branches or a natural instrument out of wood? Can you be creative with leaves? A taste of some of the things we might do in our adult only session at the Wilderness.

Feeling a bit stressed or anxious due to Covid? Just fancy being outdoors having fun as a break from your routine? We will be a small group of 6 adults who will socially distance and activities will be based on ability. As places are limited then please don’t book unless you can definitely attend. Places are limited to Lewisham residents over 18 so proof of address will be required for this free session. Please be on time as no late entry after 10am so we can start promptly. If we get alot of interest we will repeat this session.

Nature squad bookings

We are now releasing bookings on a weekly basis for the following week’s activities so book in via the whats on page for your dose of nature. Please note that activities might repeat the following week so please don’t book again and allow others attend.

Due to Covid 19 restrictions we are limiting these sessions to x5 people and to 1.5 hours. So please book per person, adult and child so we can monitor numbers. We have a big site but to protect our team and you, we ask that you social distance from other people whilst at the Wilderness unless you are from the same household or have formed a bubble. To book choose the number of places in the drop down box. It might not have the number of places you want as we have reached capacity for that session. So please don’t just book less places as you will be turned away if you turn up with more people than your booking. Thank you and please bear with us during this time.

We are opening again!

We are so looking forward to welcoming you back. This week we are trialling a new activity called Nature Squad for all ages on Friday. So please sign up for Nature Squad on the 31st July.

Join us for some outdoor activities in our wonderful community garden and greenspace for all ages and abilities. We will be doing a variety of things including helping out in the garden and polytunnel, nature hunts, wild play, helping the wildlife, fruit picking, learning how to make a fire, learning about bees, den building and bushcraft skills.

This week we will be doing a butterfly count, wild play and some fruit picking.

These sessions are for everyone and any age. No experience necessary and all equipment is provided. Please bring water, food and hand sanitiser. Wear outdoor clothes – sturdy shoes and clothes which you don’t mind getting dirty, plus bring your waterproofs if you have some as we will still go ahead if raining and do something undercover. You will be required to wear gloves if handling any tools so if you have gardening gloves or plastic gloves please bring some. All rubbish must be taken home with you.

Please queue by the allotment gate next to no 53 Riverview Park SE6 4PL and we will let people at the start of the session. Please queue at 2m apart and please don’t block the allotment entrance. Sorry we can’t allow in latecomers. Also as numbers are restricted please give us lots of notice if you can’t attend by emailing wcw@rgtb.org.uk so someone else can take your place. As numbers are limited we will be monitoring if people fail to attend and don’t inform us in advance. Thank you and we are really looking forward to welcoming you back. Please book your time slot via the What’s On page and look out for future dates which we will be releasing weekly.
