An outdoor arts and crafts club for 4-10 year olds

A bit about us:

We are a club passionate about providing meaningful experiences for children, nurturing their well-being and self-esteem, whilst gently learning about arts and crafts within nature.  It is run by Emily- a trained Early Years Teacher, Ellie- a Designer and Forest School Lead, Jenni- a Montessori practitioner, and Sue- a trained Forest School Lead. Between us we also have Paediatric and Outdoor First Aid, and Safeguarding Training.

We set up this club with the aim of offering a substantial chunk of time for outdoor discovery to our small friends who no longer have access to this having started school. The club was then fondly named Mud Club– Nature Arts and Crafts. Our focus on helping these small humans to develop wonderful arts and crafts skills at such a young age is something that we feel is often missed from the current school curriculum, but such an important and special life skill. These skills will develop their hand eye coordination and fine motor skills, as well as improving well-being and contributing to all areas of development. The activities we provide range weekly, and will provide them with a variety of skills from helping with DIY at home to understanding sculpture as a form of art. The children delight in exploring their creativity, from making their marks with paint, making sculptures with clay, to using different grades of sandpaper to make their wooden creations deliciously smooth to touch. They feel proud of the artwork they create, including stick men, wands, necklaces, beads, and weaving. We also explore other sensory pleasures, such as chocolate mud – a glorious mixture of cornflour, water and cocoa powder, which creates a squishable delicious mess to squelch one’s hands through.

The children of mud, as they are so fondly called, feel free and in control of their decisions for these sessions. They choose what to do, when to eat their lunch, test their boundaries and form lovely bonds with each other. We gently keep them safe and have a whole host of magical projects that the children can get involved in, whilst also giving them the autonomy to make their own choices.
